A Step by Step Guide

Not all genealogy software is created equal. Assess your individual needs and keep them in mind when evaluating various genealogy software packages. What works for someone else may not necessarily be appropriate for your needs, so do some research before making a purchase. Some people may have a more extensive family than yours or various other circumstances that prevent you from using certain types of software to conduct a thorough search. Here are some things to consider when selecting genealogy software to meet your needs:

  1. What is the reason for your ancestral search?

  2. How extensive is your family?

  3. How much history are you trying to capture, 50, 200, 200 years or more?

  4. Will you publish or share your findings or will they remain private?

  5. What type of records do you intend to store?

Each type of software package has its own capability for retrieval, storage and maintenance of information. Be sure to select a package that can accommodate all your needs, Remember that the further back in history you go to collect information, you will need a more reliable, capable software package than if you only capture basic information.
