A Step by Step Guide

PC Accessories

Pros: you can use your PC to store information directly to the hard drive, on CD ROMs, DVD’s (can last up to 3 decades), Floppy Disks, or Removable Jump Drives, which will save on storage space. Also, indexing and other time-consuming functions can be completed in less time than if done by hand.

Cons: not everyone owns a PC so you will still need to create printed documents. Software becomes outdated rather quickly, system failure is always a risk, and cheaper CDs/DVDS may become unreadable from wear.

What it basically boils down to is that more than one storage system is best and will work for almost everyone. How you arrange your records is completely up to you, but remember that keeping organized is a very important and continuous process. Also remember to keep your filing system SIMPLE!

Paper File Supplies

Here are a few things that you will need to set up a paper filing system.

·        A filing cabinet/file boxes

·        Letter-size hanging file folders (colored)

·      Manila folders.

·        Pens

·        Highlighters (light colors only)

·        Labels for file folders

NOTE: For both sets of grandparents (grand and great-grand), use colored folders to indicate their blood relatives. The typical color representation for each is as follows:

·        Kin to your father’s father – Blue colored folder

·        Kin to your father's mother – Green colored folder

·        Kin to your mother's father – Red colored folder

·        Kin to your mother's mother – Yellow colored folder
